    I’ve always wondered if you could see her house from downtown Santa Clara which at the time was near Washington and Main and Jackson about 3 miles away. But I doubt it. She was far enough out of town. She would be horrified by the what they’ve done to her property and the area, freeway right next door and the developments…

    Spoiler alert: there is no mystery, its just an old Victorian house. You can find the same architecture in old downtown San Jose. It's a tourist trap. Mary Hayes Chenowyth, a healer and very rich, also had a mansion in San Jose, and there is no charge.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 4 години тому

      The Hayes Masion isn't even the original. The original burned in 1899, and in 1905 a new Mediterranean style villa was constructed in its place. What makes the Winchester house unique is 1) its original. 2) it may be Queen Anne style but the layout, design, and the innovations created for it were very unique. 3) its one of the largest mansions in the United States. There are a lot of unique features to it. That may not matter to some people, but other folks, such as myself find value in it especially because of the story of the wonderful lady who built it.

    A story I’ve heard that made me smile. Apparently, the proposed name for the ship was the Queen Victoria. When the Cunard Chairman approached the King to get permission for the name, instead of just saying we would like to call it the QV, he fluffed it up and asked permission to name the ship after the most beloved Queen of the last century. Before he got another word out the King said, I’m sure my wife would be delighted.

      The reason why was mentioned at the beginning of the video. Walt used to take his daughters out on Saturdays and everywhere they went, places only offered fun for the children, and parents had to sit around watching them. Walt said "I felt that there should be something built, some kind of amusement enterprise built, where the parents and the children could have fun together."

    We visited in 2007 but it seemed limited with where we could access. I don’t remember seeing the engine room. I wanted to see a room from the hotel. Housekeeping was cleaning and I asked if I could peek in and she said no. All the rooms were occupied and it was against the rules. We did eat at the restaurant on the ship and I even crawled my 6’3” 225# self through the submarine though. Lol. Cluster phobia X10 in there. Great video.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 2 дні тому

      No that capsizing thing was a bunch of nonsense the media got wrong. True the previous operators of the ship didn't take care of the ship. But the CURRENT operators take good care of the ship, she's already had $25 million of repairs and restoration done, and more work is still being done. The new management has been running the ship at a profit since it reopened and all the profit has been invested into repairs. The Queen Mary will be perfectly fine.

      This is literally where I would go in such an event. The Queen Mary is also the safest location in Southern California during the Big Earthquake, because even the biggest earthquakes hardly make the ship budge at all.

    • @kewlztertc5386
      @kewlztertc5386 2 дні тому

      @AlextheHistorian not sure about earthquakes. I don't think the QM in its current condition could withstand tsunamis resulting from major earthquakes. But the island and port the ship is located in, has only one way in, and would make a great island fort.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 2 дні тому

      @kewlztertc5386 well the Queen Mary has sat through some big earthquakes in the 50 years she's been in Long Beach. A friend of mine was on the ship during the 1994 Northridge Earthquake and said the ship gently rolled ever so slightly, hardly noticeable. The big earthquake yet to happen would occur on the San Andreas fault, which is at least 50-60 miles from the coastline, it couldn't displace enough water to generate a tsunami of any concern, maybe a couple feet high if that. Tsunamis really only occur when an earthquake strikes the coast or an area underwater.

    • @kewlztertc5386
      @kewlztertc5386 2 дні тому

      @AlextheHistorian Tsunami travel at 500mph across the ocean. The plate that the San Andreas is connected to rubs against the Mariana Trench (induction fault) in the pacific. Also, any earthquakes in the pacific rim of fire, from Alaska to Japan, can generate Tsunami that will travel clear across the ocean.

    • @AlextheHistorian
      @AlextheHistorian 2 дні тому

      In 2017...or 2019 I can't remember which, I was still living in Southern California at the time. We got hit with a 7.1 earthquake, located along the San Andreas, it didn't generate a tsunami. The San Andreas isn't expected to generate an earthquake larger than an 8.2. It's located far inland, and a a slipping fault doesn't cause other faults to slip. Now where I live, in the Pacific Northwest, we have the Cascadia fault which can generate more powerful Earthquakes in the 9.0 range. The Cascadia is underwater, that one is definitely expected to create a tsunami.
